Virgin Vinyl Sunday

Welcome to my listening room!

What is Virgin Vinyl Sunday?

Every new album I add to my collection is posted here.  Join us at 5 PM PST for Virgin Vinyl Sunday Live on our Facebook Page.

Little Brother – The Listening

Phonte, Big Pooh, and 9th Wonder are the best things in Hip Hop to come out of North Carolina.  This album takes me back to a time when Hip Hop was more than mumble rap and thinly veiled luxury goods advertisements for the disenfranchised.

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings – I Learned The Hard Way

I chose this album for Virgin Vinyl Sunday after watching the Sharon Jones documentary, Miss Sharon Jones.  I’ve enjoyed every song this beautiful group of musicians has put out.  Rest in Peace Sharon.  Watch the video for the Opening, listening, and discussion of the Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings album, I Learned The Hard Way

Sweetback – Sweetback

In 1999 “What would Sade be like without Sade?” was answered and Sweetback made their debut. Having great synergy and several awards under their belts was icing on the cake, but they went and collaborated with the likes of Maxwell, Amel Larrieux, and Leroy Osbourne (of Sade).

Gregory Issacs – Night Nurse

An album that weaved its way throughout my childhood and one I picked up at my favorite record store in Hawaii. Mahalo Hungry Ear!  It was nice listening to this album and being taken back to time spent with my family in Florida.

Norah Jones – Featuring Norah Jones…

It was like the record gods knew exactly what I wanted.  A compilation of songs featuring Norah Jones.  This one doesn’t disappoint with tracks from Sebastian and Belle, Talib Kweli, Ray Charles, and others.  No Norah fan should be without this album.

Dexter Gordon – Walk The Blues

On this episode of Virgin Vinyl Sunday, we open Dexter Gordon – Walk The Blues.  I didn’t expect to enjoy this album as much as I did.  I picked it up on a whim, and I’m glad I did.

Surefire Soul Ensemble – Out On The Coast

The second album from a local San Diego group, the Surefire Soul Ensemble.  I picked this album up at M-Theory Music in Mission Hills…twice.  On on both vinyl and CD.  Watch our first Virgin Vinyl Sunday Live!

Miles Davis – Kind of Blue (MFSL)

This is the fourth time I’ve bought this album.  First, was the bin VG find $9. Next, I got a translucent blue copy from a record club that I joined.  Next, I picked up an original “six-eye” pressing.  The previous three were stolen with the rest of my records, and now I have this copy.  While not my favorite Miles album, I do enjoy it.  What’s your favorite Miles Davis album?

Durand Jones & The Indications (Self Titled)

The first Virgin Vinyl Sunday in 6 months! I picked this album up at FeelIt Records in East Village here in San Diego. This album has an old school vibe and reminds me of the late 60’s. Take a listen.

Melody Gardot – The Absence

Melody Gardot – The Absence.  Her third album and one that I’ve had in my waiting to open backlog for about 6 months.  After listening, I don’t know how I let it sit there unopened for so long.

Muddy Waters – Folk Singer

If you’re feeling blue or don’t have anyone to drink 3 fingers of scotch with Mr. Waters makes for great company.  Inversely, if you have a hankering for a “Big Leg Woman”, he too knows what you’re talking about.

Vanessa Fernandez – When The Levee Breaks

I’ve been waiting for this album since I heard a whisper of it being made. I’m a pretty big Vanessa Fernandez fan and am looking forward to having her as an interviewee on Living in Stereo.  So, if you’re reading this Vanessa…now you know.

John Coltrane – Coltrane Jazz

The virgin vinyl selection for this week is the follow-up album to his classic, Giant Steps.  Coltrane Jazz, an album that only flows and takes the music back to a sound more like the standards.  No less Coltrane in the expression, but a far cry from albums like Offering at Temple.  An album which is definitively not one of my favorite things.

Sade – Soldier of Love

My love for Sade knows no limit.  The only band that I have traveled cross-country to see perform, and I would gladly do it again.  Having seen them twice in less than 15 years I consider myself privileged.  A Sade tour is as infrequent as finding a Ginger born on February 29th.

Alabama Shakes – Sound & Color

Their second album, and one that gets regular play in my home.

Gregory Porter – Be Good

I love his style, but I don’t know about that hat.

Diana Krall -Wallflower

I love her smooth, sultry voice as she sings standards.  What’s your favorite song sung by Diana?

John Coltrane – A Love Supreme

Here’s our first video!  It’s only fitting that I chose a Coltrane album to kick off this year.  He is easily my favorite saxophonist and a deep artist, that I relate to.  I’ve even sampled some of his work in my own music production.

What’s the album for the week to come?  Hmm…what do you think I should open?
